Deauville awarded the ‘Sustainable Innovative Destination’ label: back for another 3 years!

Remember: in 2019, the Deauville Convention Centre launched Deauville into the race by co-constructing the ‘Innovative Sustainable Destination’ label with eight other pilot areas (Biarritz, Bordeaux, Cannes, Marseille, Metz, Nancy, Nantes and Rennes). By 2022, the efforts of all the local players had made Deauville one of the top five certified towns in France. In 2023, InDeauville Tourisme took over the management of this national standard from the France Congrès Événements Association. Where do we stand today?
What is the ‘Innovative Sustainable Destination’ label?

The France Congrès et Événements network provides the keys to cities and towns wishing to take concrete action to promote sustainable tourism throughout their territory. The guidelines are structured around 8 issues and 26 actions. It is aimed at local pilots, including sites that have already received ISO 20121 certification, who are responsible for coordinating, implementing and structuring the actions and best practices in each area:
- Open and transparent governance
- Sustainable mobility to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050
- Responsible consumption
- Inclusion
- Enhancing the economy and protecting our heritage
- Mobilising resources for sustainable innovation
- Involving all stakeholders
- Ensuring public safety
Unite all Deauville’s partners to obtain the ‘Innovative Sustainable Destination’ label
As you will have realised, the ‘Sustainable Innovative Destination’ label is the culmination of a voluntary initiative to promote responsible tourism. It can only be implemented with the help of all the local partners in the professional and leisure tourism sector. The challenge for InDeauville Tourisme is to encourage and unite all its partners to make progress in implementing sustainable actions: the town of Deauville, the Centre International de Deauville, the Communauté de Communes Cœur Côte Fleurie, the Groupe Barrière Deauville, the Groupe Bertout Deauville, the Franciscaines, the Pôle International du Cheval, UMIH 14 and the Acapars merchants’ union. Following a follow-up audit in June 2023, the label was maintained for Deauville.
Renewal of the label in 2025: what new criteria for Deauville?
In order to progress and achieve ever more demanding compliance, new criteria were assessed by the certification body Bureau Veritas:
- Have a strategy for eco-responsible events and sustainable tourism in the short and medium term
- Reduce the use of carpets at events and work towards eliminating them
- Implement practices that promote sustainable food
- Aspire to excellence in customer satisfaction
- Improve the destination’s appeal to seasonal workers
- Work to reduce its carbon footprint
The certification body praised the progress made in terms of sustainable tourism and certified Destination Deauville in version 2 of the label with 100% compliance!
