Deauville awarded the ‘Sustainable Innovative Destination’ label: back for another 3 years!

Remem­ber: in 2019, the Deau­ville Con­ven­tion Centre launched Deau­ville into the race by co-con­struct­ing the ‘Innov­at­ive Sus­tain­able Des­tin­a­tion’ label with eight oth­er pilot areas (Biar­ritz, Bor­deaux, Cannes, Mar­seille, Metz, Nancy, Nantes and Rennes). By 2022, the efforts of all the loc­al play­ers had made Deau­ville one of the top five cer­ti­fied towns in France. In 2023, InDeau­ville Tour­isme took over the man­age­ment of this nation­al stand­ard from the France Con­grès Événe­ments Asso­ci­ation. Where do we stand today?

What is the ‘Innovative Sustainable Destination’ label?

The France Con­grès et Événe­ments net­work provides the keys to cit­ies and towns wish­ing to take con­crete action to pro­mote sus­tain­able tour­ism through­out their ter­rit­ory. The guidelines are struc­tured around 8 issues and 26 actions. It is aimed at loc­al pilots, includ­ing sites that have already received ISO 20121 cer­ti­fic­a­tion, who are respons­ible for coordin­at­ing, imple­ment­ing and struc­tur­ing the actions and best prac­tices in each area:

  1. Open and trans­par­ent governance
  2. Sus­tain­able mobil­ity to achieve car­bon neut­ral­ity by 2050
  3. Respons­ible consumption
  4. Inclu­sion
  5. Enhan­cing the eco­nomy and pro­tect­ing our heritage
  6. Mobil­ising resources for sus­tain­able innovation
  7. Involving all stakeholders
  8. Ensur­ing pub­lic safety

Unite all Deauville’s partners to obtain the ‘Innovative Sustainable Destination’ label

As you will have real­ised, the ‘Sus­tain­able Innov­at­ive Des­tin­a­tion’ label is the cul­min­a­tion of a vol­un­tary ini­ti­at­ive to pro­mote respons­ible tour­ism. It can only be imple­men­ted with the help of all the loc­al part­ners in the pro­fes­sion­al and leis­ure tour­ism sec­tor. The chal­lenge for InDeau­ville Tour­isme is to encour­age and unite all its part­ners to make pro­gress in imple­ment­ing sus­tain­able actions: the town of Deau­ville, the Centre Inter­na­tion­al de Deau­ville, the Com­mun­auté de Com­munes Cœur Côte Fleur­ie, the Groupe Bar­rière Deau­ville, the Groupe Ber­tout Deau­ville, the Fran­cis­caines, the Pôle Inter­na­tion­al du Che­val, UMIH 14 and the Aca­pars mer­chants’ uni­on. Fol­low­ing a fol­low-up audit in June 2023, the label was main­tained for Deauville.

Renewal of the label in 2025: what new criteria for Deauville?

In order to pro­gress and achieve ever more demand­ing com­pli­ance, new cri­ter­ia were assessed by the cer­ti­fic­a­tion body Bur­eau Veritas:

  • Have a strategy for eco-respons­ible events and sus­tain­able tour­ism in the short and medi­um term
  • Reduce the use of car­pets at events and work towards elim­in­at­ing them
  • Imple­ment prac­tices that pro­mote sus­tain­able food
  • Aspire to excel­lence in cus­tom­er satisfaction
  • Improve the des­tin­a­tion’s appeal to sea­son­al workers
  • Work to reduce its car­bon footprint

The cer­ti­fic­a­tion body praised the pro­gress made in terms of sus­tain­able tour­ism and cer­ti­fied Des­tin­a­tion Deau­ville in ver­sion 2 of the label with 100% compliance!
